This class will be scheduled for Fall 2021, specific dates pending.
Instructor: Dana Jones
Patchwork City is a fun quilt in so many ways. You can pull fabrics from your stash. You can fussy cut motifs of all sorts. Your city can be filled with cats, dogs, high-rise buildings, parks, shops, vehicles and so much more. You chose the color palette. You chose how many of the 75 blocks you will make and which ones will let you create a city you love. There are 25 blocks in each of three sizes designed to interlock with each other in multiple ways. Each block is a unique design but will be taught in groups of blocks that have similar shapes and construction techniques.
The class will be offered in five three-hour sessions via Zoom. The instructor will be available to you between classes and recordings of the sessions will be available to you, especially helpful if you miss a session.
In the first session, we will spend time on fabric selection. How much fabric you will need to purchase beyond your stash will depend on the size of your stash, the size quilt you decide to make and how you will theme your quilt. The class sample includes taxicab fabric that was created specifically for each block. You’ll learn how to create fabric for your quilt. Repeating a fabric that epitomizes the city you will make in each block is one great way to pull the diverse blocks together. Once you know the size of quilt you will make and motifs you want to incorporate, the instructor will help you compute the amounts of fabric you will need to purchase.
For the first class, have a stack of small cuts that are likely to fit into your quilt on hand because you’ll make your first several blocks. After the first class, you will be prepared to gather the remainder of fabrics for your quilt.
At first glance, you may think this quilt is foundation paper pieced. It is not. That said, many of the blocks can be foundation pieced. The instructor can provide foundations for these block for a fee paid directly to her. Class demos will teach construction techniques from the book and construction with foundations if that is your choice.
